We were talking with some friends about Machu Picchu. Some of our friends have sickle-cell trait.

Are there methods to allow someone with this condition (AS, not SS) to prepare their body for high-altitude activities?
Can someone with diagnosed AS sickle-cell trait mitigate potential harm by using supplemental oxygen like mountaineers do?

It might not be worth the risk just to see a tourist site, but our friends also travel by commercial airline. Any safety precautions would be good to know.

Thanks,
-Erica

For those who may not know, Dr. Cook discussed this case in the latest "Wilderness and Environmental Medicine" journal. Very cool and a great letter! Thanks!

Glad to see the information seeping out to the general public. There is so much education needed about this hereditary condition the is present in many different people.

Very interesting post! To be honest, splenic infarction would have been VERY low on my differential. Thanks for the info!
