Essential Healthcare Amid Dust and Desolation in Southeast Ethiopia
MSF doctor Anna Greenham describes work and life in the Somali region of Ethiopia

“Life in the Somali region of Ethiopia is tough. The rains have failed, food is running out and even the camels are dying of thirst. Add to this a complex armed conflict and you have a recipe for disaster. Nomadic people can’t find water or grazing for their livestock and are forced to travel huge distances to survive. Many have lost everything. Without a livelihood they move to the edge of towns where they live in squalid conditions in very basic shelters, unable to access clean water or food. It is in one of these small rural towns, Wardher, that MSF provides the only reliable health care for a dispersed population of about 40,000 people.

Extra Polar Medicine course due to demand

Due to the overwhelming success of our Polar Medicine Course in 2009 we have now added some new dates.  The dates for the NEW polar course are 22-28 February 2009, the course is being run by Dr Martin Rhodes and Dr Lesley Thomson.

The Polar Medicine Course is ideal for those working in polar and arctic environments.  The course has been featured in the BMJ several times and we are really proud of the success.

Tutors will develop the skills of participants through practical sessions and hands-on experience, rescuing and treating cold-water immersion, frostbite, altitude related illnesses and hypothermia, all managed whilst in the field.  Polar days and nights will be filled with developing winter survival skills from; emergency shelters, navigation, digging snow holes, snow mobiling, dog sledding, snow shoeing, plus much more.
